DAI, Z.-J.; LIU, J.T.; LEI, Y.-P., and ZHANG, X.-L., 2010. Patterns of sediment transport pathways on a headland bay beach—Nanwan Beach, South China: a case study. Journal of Coastal Research, 26(6), 1096–1103. West Palm Beach (Florida), ISSN 0749-0208. Embayed beaches bounded by headlands, headland bay beaches, are a common feature along the coast of southern China. The patterns of sediment transport pathways in these beaches are important for understanding changes in beach and nearshore geomorphology that are a response to different wave energy conditions. Nanwan Beach in southern China is characterized by a large seasonal variation of incident waves. In this study, sediment samples and a series of beach profiles from Nanwan Beach are examined to determine spatial changes in sediment transport pathways. Empirical orthogonal function analysis of the profile data indicates that the variation of sediment transport occurs in two distinct modes. The first mode is related to seasonal changes in cross-shore sediment transport with associated alongshore sediment transport. The trend of sediment transport is seaward in winter and landward in summer. The second mode is onshore-offshore sediment exchange, which occurs in the intertidal zone in summer and in the swash zone in winter. Moreover, grain size trend analysis of sediment samples suggests that sediment transport in the nearshore zone is predominantly in the northwesterly direction because of southeast incidence waves in winter, with Nanwan Bay opening to the south. The sediment transport pathways are to the north in summer from the influence of typhoons. ADDITIONAL INDEX WORDS: Sediment transport, grain size trends, EOF analysis, Nanwan Beach.

Sandbar Migration Due to Cross-Shore Sediment Transport; A Case Study of Noshahr Coasts, Iran

Cross-shore sediment transport is one of the effective factors in erosion and sedimentation, and affects dynamics of the beach profile in coastal areas. Furthermore, sandbar migration due to cross-shore sediment transport mostly effects beach nourishment, displacement of pollutions trapped in sediments, and organism and plants’ lives.  In this manuscript, sandbar migration due to cro...

Model Scenerios of Shoreline Change at Kaanapali Beach, Maui, Hawaii: Seasonal and Extreme Events

Kaanapali beach is a well-defined littoral cell of carbonate sand extending 2 km south from Black Rock (a basalt headland) to Hanakao’o Point. The beach experiences dynamic seasonal shoreline change forced by longshore transport from two dominant swell regimes. In summer, south swells (Hs = 1-2 m Tp = 14-25 s) drive sand to the north, while in winter, north swells (Hs = 5-8 m Tp = 14-20 s) driv...

Community Structure and Biodiversity of Intertidal Sandy Beach Macrofauna in Chabahar Bay, Northeast of Oman Gulf, IR Iran

Biodiversity and community structure of macrofauna of the intertidal sandy beach at Chabahar Bay were studied for a period of ten months in 2007. A total of 32 species were observed and identified in this study so that polychaete with 16 species was numerically dominant. The results showed changing densities were influenced by monsoon season so that maximum density (1935.47 ind/m2) was observed...
